Measure Your Pressure Month
Free Blood Pressure checks across Medway this June
Residents in Medway are being encouraged to take advantage of free blood pressure checks this June as part of the national “Measure Your Pressure” campaign.
Medway Council’s Public Health team will be hosting a series of drop-in clinics throughout the month, making it quick and easy for residents to get checked. There is no appointment required—simply turn up at a convenient location.
Why it matters
High blood pressure (hypertension) often has no obvious symptoms, meaning many people may have it without realising. In the UK, around one in three adults is affected.
If left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to serious health issues, including heart attacks and strokes. However, early detection means it can often be managed through simple lifestyle changes or medication.
Last year, over 600 residents took part in the campaign across Medway:
- 170 people were referred to their GP for further checks
- 55 people were referred to additional support services, including NHS Health Checks and stop smoking support
Understanding your reading
A blood pressure reading has two numbers:
- Systolic (top number): pressure when your heart beats
- Diastolic (bottom number): pressure when your heart rests
- You are generally considered to have high blood pressure if your reading is:
- 140/90 or above when taken by a healthcare professional
- 135/85 or above when taken at home
A clinic will be taking place locally at:
Hoo Library
24 Church Street Hoo ME3 9AL
Tuesday 2 June – 2pm to 5pm
Residents are encouraged to attend this local session where possible.
Drop-in sessions will also be available at a range of locations across Medway throughout June, including libraries, community hubs, leisure centres, and workplaces. All visits are free, quick, and carried out by a friendly Public Health team.
